Finding a Family Dentist in Riverstone: What to Look For

Dr. Chintan Patel

Riverstone has added a lot of residents in the past five years. Which means more people looking for a dentist — and more practices competing for them. If you’re new to the area or rethinking your current choice, here’s what actually matters when picking a family dental practice here.

Proximity is convenient. It’s not the whole decision.

There are practices physically on Garfield Road in Riverstone. Being close matters – particularly if you’re managing school drop-offs or want your kids to be able to walk to an appointment. But proximity alone doesn’t tell you whether you’ll wait two weeks for a check-up, whether the practice bulk bills under CDBS, or whether there’s a dentist on the team your kids will actually feel comfortable with.

A clinic six minutes away that can see your family this week is more useful than one around the corner with a three-week waitlist.

What “family dentist” should actually mean

Adults and children treated under the same roof.  Not a practice that primarily treats adults and tolerates the occasional child patient. The difference shows up in chair-side manner and whether the team handles dental anxiety well.

A broad enough service range  that you’re not being referred elsewhere for fillings, emergency care, or an orthodontic assessment. Repeated referrals fragment care and make it harder to get a consistent picture of your family’s dental health.

Saturday appointments.  Because nobody should have to take a day off work for a routine clean.

Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

Children aged 0–17 who receive certain government payments — including Family Tax Benefit Part A — may be eligible for Medicare-funded dental treatment under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. This covers check-ups, cleaning, X-rays, fillings, and fissure sealants. Orthodontic work is not covered. Check eligibility through your Medicare online account at myGov.

Four questions worth asking before you book

Can I get a new patient appointment within two weeks?  A long wait usually means the practice is carrying more patients than it can properly service.
How many dentists are on the team?  A single-dentist practice means if that dentist is unavailable, you wait. A multi-dentist team gives more scheduling flexibility for a family of four.
Do you bulk bill for CDBS-eligible children?  Some practices do, some don’t. Either way the Medicare rebate applies — but if the practice doesn’t bulk bill, you pay upfront and claim back.
Can you see us for a dental emergency the same day or next day?  A practice with same-day emergency appointments is worth more than one that’s five minutes closer but has a two-day wait.

Some clinics quote a base fee and add retainers, refinements, and scan costs as extras. Before committing to any provider, confirm whether refinements and retainers are included.
